From the entrance exams for various colleges to the placement selection procedures at various institutes GD or group discussion has adopted the role of the key player. It is the prime tool to reduce the number of candidates for interviews. But over the years GD has changed its shape. With various coaching institutes giving training on how to succeed in GDs almost everyone knows the crucial points -- like when to start , when to cut through, how to cut through . Anyways that is not why i have put up this post. I beleive GD is not the true instrument to be able to measure any parameter of a deserving candidate. Its popularity has brought it in fashion but its utility has been decreasing. Lets ponder on some of the aspects of GDs:-
1) The intiator is considered to be the leader- speaking first in a GD is not a difficult task for anyone anymore. But in order to get that advantage candidates tend to start early. If the fascilitator has given them 5 mins to think about the topic, candidates tend to start before even the first minute is finished. Thats why intiator if starting well before time is not depicting a leader picture , but infact he is paralysing the group by not giving enough time to think over the topic to himself or to others.
2) The one who cuts through when other is speaking is the winner because he gains double advantage- first he gets the chance to express his views and second he prevented his rival candidate to speak.----- I though GD means group DISCUSSION. In any discussion cutting through is not an appreciable and healthy practice. One can never succeed in his/her career if he/she doesnt have patience to listen to others especially his team members. This very aspect makes the name GD a farce.
3) The more number of times you enter (get the opportunity to speak ) the more are your chances to taste success in a GD.----- If its all about getting into GD as many times as you can it simply shows that its all about pushing your views as forcefully as you can. Are not we looking for team spirit in a GD ??? .Most of the times candidates are too busy trying to get in the GD and they simply don't have time to listen to whats other saying.... forget about discussion.
4)Team work ----- Now you are klling me .... show me a single GD where a single candidate has shown iota of team spirit. Hey its all about getting through for interviews and when your group members are your biggest enemies who wants to show team spirit ???
